POLITICAL parties working together under the National Electoral Reform Agenda (NERA), have backed MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai to lead an opposition coalition in next year’s general elections.

The endorsement was confirmed during Wednesday’s demonstration at Freedom Square in Harare against government’s takeover of the process of acquiring biometric voter registration (BVR) kits.

Opposition parties which participated in the protest took turns to endorse former prime minister Tsvangirai to lead a fresh challenge against President Robert Mugabe in next year’s elections.

First to endorse the MDC-T leader was Zanu Ndonga representative Sifiso Sithole Bharo, daughter to the late nationalist Ndabaningi Sithole, who said as a party they were behind Tsvangirai’s candidacy.

The same sentiments were expressed by the NERA organising secretary Joelson Mugari of the African Democratic Party (ADP) who said the parties were clear that Tsvangirai was the main candidate.

Not to be left out was former Zanu PF secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa, founder of Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) party.

"We started the process of removing this cruel government long back and now we support Tsvangirai for Presidency," Mutasa said.

A fringe political party Progress Democrats of Zimbabwe (PDZ) led by UK-based Barbara Nyagomo also backed the MDC-T leader while, earlier this week, Transform Zimbabwe President Jacob Ngarivhume indicated he would support Tsvangirai’s candidacy.
