A BUHERA man from Mushinji village under Chief Makumbe on Friday battered his wife to death with an axe handle after suspecting that she was having an extra-marital affair.
The police said the suspect, Gibison Muzhingi, 38, was relaxing at home when his wife, Alice Murigwe, 38, returned from Masvingo where she had attended her brother’s funeral.
Muzhingi was reportedly in a foul mood when Murigwe arrived after he got wind that his wife was cheating on him. Muzhingi is said to have declined the food Murigwe had prepared and began accusing her of infidelity.
Around 10pm Muzhinji confronted his wife about the infidelity issue and the two reportedly exchanged harsh words. This degenerated into a fist fight.
Muzhingi allegedly picked a wooden axe handle and hit Murigwe in the head.
Their stepson, Norman Munyika, 16, heard some screaming and rushed to the room to investigate.
He found Muzhingi holding a wooden axe handle with Murigwe lying unconscious on the floor.
Muzhingi disappeared from the scene while Munyika went to inform the villagers.
Manicaland police spokesperson, Enoch Chishiri, urged people to resolve their disputes amicably or seek counselling rather than take the law into their own hands.
