MDC-T provincial structures are resisting proposals of a second vice president within the party structures, party spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora has said.
“There are two distinct main debates that are coming. The first debate is on the office of the second vice president. There appears to be some resistance; serious resistance about the office of the second vice president in the party,” Mwonzora said.
He added: “The majority of the provinces seem to be against the idea because they don’t think it really advances anything.”
The former Nyanga North legislator said the opposition party was yet to reach a final position on the issue because consultations were ongoing in provinces such as Masvingo, Manicaland and the Midlands.
The MDC-T held provincial assembly meetings in Matabeleland North, Bulawayo and Matabeleland South over the weekend.
“The aim of the provincial assembly meetings is to explain to members of the party, the leadership of the party, the wards, the districts and the provinces on the template that is going to be employed at congress.”
He said they were also clarifying the eligibility criteria for those keen to contest for posts at congress “as well as to deal with the critical issue of any constitutional amendments that they may want.”
“The people who addressed these meetings were the president (Morgan) Tsvangirai, Vice President (Thokhozani) Khupe and (national organising secretary) Nelson Chamisa and Theresa Makone mostly because they were dealing with the critical issues that have to deal with congress,” Mwonzora said.
